Loved this beautiful, sweet poem, Sherman. I always learn from your reading of your work, too. And I'll now be reading Luke Burgis' wonderful substack. Thanks!
Yep. The structure here is wonderful. I’ve always enjoyed rhyming in my poetry but not all rhyming. It’s like a chorus in a poem, a movement. This tells a fantastic story in a short amount of time, the poetic equivalent of a shotgun blast.
The title took me immediately to my grandma's kitchen. She didn't own a measuring device and cooked on a wood-burning kitchen stove her whole life. Her biscuits floated off the pan. But you went somewhere else entirely. This is a beautiful love poem wrapped in a metaphysical question.
The crossroads, the maybe this or that, when you take a half step and pause. We never know what the other story would have been. Some long for the other side and others, like you, know it was the best choice.
Georgia said, oooh. That's high praise. BUT in all honesty, I must confess, she says she prefers my love poem for her--"The Fisherman Thinks of His Beloved." Thats "honesty"--not to be confused with "modesty."
To truly participate in an anti-mimetic aesthetic, surely you need to transcend the vocabulary and strictures created by it altogether. Immerse yourself in oceanic reading, both broad and deep; literature from Eastern Europe and African nations still fighting against effects of colonialism and internecine battles expose a reader to an array of choices and behaviors unimaginable within the parameters of American literature. You can read yourself to a place where the frail conceits of social media falter altogether. Physical travel is good too but not always possible on a limited budget. The mind can soar even if the physical body can't afford the air fare. Library card is the best ticket possible!
I always enjoy your references to food and Diane together... a few weeks ago it was the union of salmon (you) and rice and cranberries (Diane). Great energy and texture! Food nourishes the body as love nourishes the soul. It's a fortunate man who can enjoy the health and vigor of both. The special dashes of spices individualized the composition of both. Sweeter or more savory?!!!
Holy Jalapeños Maestro!
Muy sabroso.
Feeling the love!
Such a flavorful poem. You can taste the love. Congrats. On canceling those plans, and writing like this.
Thank you, Arjan!
The "wonder" of a long term loving relationship. Thanks for the reminder

Thank you, JB. The "thyme-lime" rhyme jumped into my head immediately.
Improvised to perfection!

Thank you, Marcia. Now I'm think I needed to go find some homemade biscuits tomorrow.
Improvisation. The perfect recipe for long, loving relationship.
