Squirrel Story
very short essay
Ten years ago, as a visiting writer at Whitman College in Walla, Walla, Washington, I walked from one classroom to another with a group of students.
“The positive stereotypes of Native American are sneaker than the negative stereotypes,” I said. “The good ones turn us into Pavlov’s Indian. We become the stereotype in order to get the love and attention. Take, for instance, the stereotype that Indians are somehow closer to nature than white people are.”
At that moment, a squirrel raced from the nearby underbrush and latched onto my boot.
“Well, shit,” I said. “I guess my spirit animal is the squirrel.”

THAT’S HILARIOUS! 😆
TOO DAMN GOOD!!!!!!!!
