Mmmmmm: Yes. Deeply, yes. Felt this one in the gut. ‘They say if you love someone you’ve gotta let ‘em go, and if they return to you well then you’ll surely know.’ I can picture the water, the tide rising slowly. I can hear the low, mellow crashing of the waves at night. We have to let go of everything in life, don’t we? In little bits and pieces. Sometimes some of it--some of them--return.
I've thought about this poem for a couple days. It has been my experience that people do leave and it has been my experience that sometimes after they understand that life isn't perfect and that people aren't perfect; they come back. I also understand there's not much I can do if someone chooses to leave. I've been on the other side of that equation and I understand that time does help. There are people I haven't gone back to - and won't. I have to give the same grace to the ones who have left me. Good poem.
Life-bringers, life-renewers, they are all around us for our noticing and nourishing, even more special when they are people, especially people dear to us. Thanks for the reminder, Sherman!
I loved this when you read it on Zoom and am so glad you read it again here. Very very very powerful - on so many levels. Be on the lookout for a postcard I sent to the Fallsapart office after your Zoom reading - the image on the card reminded me of this poem, which stayed with me since I heard you read it Tuesday.
Such a kind wave to ride toward shore. Thank you for the lift.
Thank you, David.
