This Father's Day
I find my phone
& call my father.
He died 23 years
ago but I call
anyway & let
the phone keep
ringing & ringing
because, eventually,
my father is
going to answer.
My dad, a lovely guy and the smartest person I ever met, got dementia around age 80 and died six years later. He lost his languages (he was fluent in Japanese and Spanish, could speak a smattering of Hebrew and could read Latin). And his sense of humor. Or so I thought. At his memorial service, his CNA told us he joked with her in Spanish right to the end. I hadn't thought of calling him. Lightbulb. Thanks.

Beautiful
and affirming. The soul may decide to answer
