Two birds on the fence.
One falls and one sings.
I don't know which bird
will need to mend its wings.
I don't know why we paupers
still elect queens and kings.
We don't. If America hasn't felt like a democracy lately, it's because so much fear and cynicism has taken over the collective mindset that it's easy to confuse feelings of personal powerlessness with collective powerlessness. But the collective voice is intensely powerful, even if it has to start, by definition, with a flawed foundation that (for example) is currently financing abominable violence. We vote to protect our rights and to save the country from the very real possibility of an impending dictatorship. And we vote because of how many people have died for the right to speak in this way.

If only we elected a couple more Queens 😉!
