Let us speak of the beauty of bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches. Well, the bacon, lettuce, bread, and mayonnaise taste great, sure, but they're predictably great because we bought them from a great grocery store. But, O, these tomatoes—these shockingly delicious tomatoes!—fresh from the vine in our yard. My wife grew these tomatoes. She made this sandwich. O, her love for tomatoes. Her love for me. My love for her. Isn't it wonderful how a Wednesday lunch on an otherwise unremarkable day can become a wedding feast?
Some people show love through the offering of diamonds or other finery, while others show it through the food they grow and make for their people. We grow tomatoes and can sauce for the winter and every time I take our a jar, I am reminded of the love that went into growing, harvesting and making the sauce.
One of the best things about poetry is the way it reveals that nothing is really "unremarkable".
