Funny: I was just reading poems in Everyman's Library Pocket Poets edition of ' Villanelles '. Lol Anyway, I really enjoyed this one: It's always 3am, isn't it? I hate oversleeping, even though I've struggled with sleep for years now. It's a shame how lack of sleep and depression go together like peanut butter and jelly. Salute. :)
My four year old participated in a sleep study last month. Cameras, nodes, monitors, and technicians, but the worst part was that I had to sleep in the observation room too. All night I lay awake and repositioned and drifted in and out of consciousness with the thought that the doctor was also monitoring me. I kept imagining her the next morning: "Your kid slept fine, but you churned and churned like Hell."
Sherman, decades of science tell us that wind turbines are not a problem with the avian community. You know me because i spent a week with the Smoke Signals team the year it won at Sundance. You probably didn't know i am one of the pioneers of wind power, and built a project in the Altamont Pass where avian mortality was discovered. I've even brought an eagle from my project to tribal elders for ceremony. You might discover that modern wind turbines are barely a problem for raptors, while civilization itself is an absolutely huge problem. Wishing you better sleep now.
Liked your poem a lot. Have you tried Magnesium Glycinate for sleep? I take about 200 mg before bed as well as drink a herbal tea mix of lavender and chamomile. That has helped this former insomniac!
3am is when the veil is thinnest...between this world and the next...There's a reason why 3am....maybe wake and be receptive..Of the reason why you're awake..
Did you ever think maybe you are living in the wrong time zone?
My time is a cat induced 4. He knows he can’t go out until 5 because of coyotes. Coffee and silent writing or housework until 6:45, then reading. If I lived alone I would vacuum.
You can have very deep thoughts at 3.00am that don't manifest at any other times.
I try not to struggle , let it be . Life is good.
Let me sleep. No.
Let me cover my insecurities in caffeine.
Let my head ache due overdose of sugar,
but pain pills, for fear of being groggy;
the fear I use to shake me out of my sleep;
my life becomes a perpetual graveyard shift,
talk radio going in and out of reception,
while part of my brain prays that the white noise can soothe me into a deep rest.
But I must confess, it isn't the caffeine
that keeps me up, nor the chocolate cake;
it's the sweet sorry of inadequatcy slowly enveloping me, and then shaking me awake!

I know that 3 am wake-up all too well! Stunning poem.
I know whereof you compose.
That's my good wife. Poor girl.

so, so painful. The mind is one's own enemy.
